History

The St. Lawrence Adult Tamburitza Orchestra was formed in 1991, under the direction of Mr. George Murlin, Jr. The purpose of the orchestra is to promote and perpetuate Croatian music. To be a member, one must be 18 years of age and be an active member of the Croatian Fraternal Union (CFU). At present, the orchestra consists of 25 musicians and singers. Instruments include, but are not limited to, prim, brać, bugarija, tamburitza cello, and bass.

The St. Lawrence Adult Tamburitza Orchestra performs at gatherings throughout the year and at several nursing homes during the Christmas holiday season. The orchestra has also performed at 15 of the annual Croatian Fraternal Union Tamburitza Festivals that are held throughout the United States and Canada. The first CFU Tamfest performance for the St. Lawrence Adult Tamburitza Orchestra was in 1991 in Toronto, Canada. The orchestra has also traveled to Pittsburgh, PA; Las Vegas, NV; Meadowlands, NJ; Cleveland, OH; Buffalo, NY; Nashville, TN; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; and Columbus, OH. In 1996, the orchestra did not have to travel far because the Tamfest was held in Harrisburg, PA. In 2010, the group was featured in the annual CFU Croatian Day program at Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh.

During the years of its existence, the St. Lawrence Adult Tamburitza Orchestra has been under the direction of 3 directors: Mr. George Murlin, Jr., Mr. Mark Kresho, and, at present, Mr. Ivan Hrabric. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, at their lodge home, the St. Lawrence Lodge #13 in Steelton, PA.

Several fundraising events are held throughout the year to help with travel expenses. (See events.) Come out to support the St. Lawrence Adult Tamburitza Orchestra and join in the fun!
